KOMERI Signs MOU for ‘K-SeaQ’ Joint Brand to Localize Core Marine and Fisheries Equipment
The Korea Research Institute of Ships & Ocean Engineering (KOMERI) announced on the 17th
that it has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) at its headquarters in Yeongdo, Busan,
to establish the ‘K-SeaQ’ joint brand aimed at localizing and commercializing key marine and fisheries equipment.
The agreement includes participation from a total of six institutions and companies:
KOMERI, shipyard KHAN Co., Ltd., navigation and communication equipment specialist SeaNet Co., Ltd., Marine Electronics Co., Ltd., Samyung ENC Co., Ltd., and SAN Engineering Co., Ltd.
Under the MOU, the participating organizations will establish a multi-faceted cooperation framework, including:
the establishment of a K-SeaQ joint venture,
support for EPC (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction) sales activities by shipyards,
collaborative R&D on additional equipment under the joint brand,
and promotion of turnkey business proposals to shipowners.
‘K-SeaQ’ stands for Korea Sea Quality, representing a national quality assurance brand for marine equipment.
The initiative will primarily focus on the commercialization of five core products: automatic steering systems,
fiber optic gyroscopic compasses, fish finders, radar systems, and multifunctional displays.
Since 2021, KOMERI has been developing localization technologies for core marine and fisheries equipment
with support from the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries and the Korea Institute of Marine Science & Technology Promotion (KIMST).
To overcome barriers to market entry, KOMERI is pursuing business development through a joint venture with KHAN and others,
aiming to commercialize domestically produced navigation and communication equipment in a package supply format.
By combining the products of participating companies, it is expected that Korea will be able to supply key navigation and
communication equipment domestically—potentially reducing reliance on foreign imports and transforming the existing market structure.
President Jeong-Cheol Bae of KOMERI stated,
“This agreement marks a pivotal moment for establishing technological independence in a market heavily reliant on imports,” and added,
“We will continue to build a foundation for global expansion through cooperation with participating companies.”
Meanwhile, the joint brand ‘K-SeaQ’ will continue to strengthen its collaborative network to promote the localization and commercialization of marine and fisheries equipment.
Starting on the 29th, KOMERI and the six participating organizations, along with E&Co. and Saramdeul Communication,
will exhibit at INAMARINE 2025, the largest shipbuilding and marine industry exhibition in Indonesia, to promote Korean-made equipment and accelerate entry into overseas markets.
